Self-Cleaning Rotary Grate Magnetic Separator for Battery Powder Processing

A self-cleaning rotary grate magnetic separator is an inline powder-processing system that combines rotating magnetic rods with a programmable automatic cleaning cycle. During production, the rotating grate helps reduce powder bridging and exposes the material stream to the magnetic surfaces. When cleaning is required, material feeding pauses briefly while the system automatically removes captured ferrous contaminants.

For lithium battery material producers, this separates two functions clearly: rotation maintains powder flow during production, while automatic cleaning reduces the manual work normally required to remove accumulated iron from magnetic rods.

The MAG SPRING® system shown in this video is designed for enclosed powder lines operating under atmospheric, negative-pressure or slight positive-pressure conditions.

How the Self-Cleaning Rotary Grate Magnetic Separator Works

During normal operation, powder or granular material passes through a rotating magnetic grate. The rotating rods continuously redistribute cohesive material, helping reduce bridging, channel formation and uneven loading across the magnetic surfaces.

Ferrous contaminants are attracted to and retained on the magnetic rod surfaces. When the preset cleaning interval is reached, the upstream feed pauses briefly and the PLC starts the automatic cleaning sequence. Captured contaminants are discharged without requiring the operator to dismantle the magnetic grate or wipe each rod by hand.

After the cleaning cycle is completed, the magnetic assembly returns to its operating position and material feeding resumes.

Automatic Cleaning Cycle with a Brief Feed Pause

Automatic cleaning does not mean that powder feeding continues during the cleaning cycle. The correct sequence is:

  1. The separator captures ferrous contaminants during normal production.
  2. The upstream material feed pauses at the preset cleaning time.
  3. The PLC initiates the automatic cleaning and iron-discharge sequence.
  4. Captured contaminants are transferred to the discharge area.
  5. The magnetic assembly returns to the operating position.
  6. Material feeding resumes.

This programmed sequence replaces routine manual rod cleaning and allows the cleaning interval to be integrated into the production schedule.

The equipment is designed to support 24-hour production schedules through repeated operating and automatic-cleaning cycles. It should not be described as zero-downtime or as cleaning without stopping the feed.

Rotating Magnetic Grate for Bridging-Prone Powders

Fine and cohesive powders can form bridges across static magnetic grids. Once a stable bridge forms, material flow becomes uneven and part of the powder may bypass the intended capture area.

The rotating magnetic grate continuously changes the contact pattern between the powder and magnetic rods. This helps:

  • Reduce powder bridging and channel formation
  • Distribute material across the magnetic surfaces
  • Limit localized accumulation between rods
  • Maintain a more consistent flow path during production

Actual separation performance depends on particle size, bulk density, flowability, throughput, ferrous load and magnetic configuration. A higher Gauss value alone does not determine the result.

Pressure-Resistant Structure for Enclosed Powder Lines

Fine battery powders are frequently handled in enclosed conveying and dosing systems. Under slight positive pressure, powder may escape through inadequately sealed moving interfaces or connection points.

The pressure-resistant sealed structure is designed to help reduce powder leakage during production and automatic cleaning. The equipment can be configured for atmospheric, negative-pressure and slight positive-pressure pipeline conditions.

Pressure rating, sealing material and installation direction must be confirmed against the project specification.

PLC and HMI Automatic Control

The PLC and HMI control system coordinates grate rotation, feed-pause signals, automatic cleaning and contaminant discharge. Operators can monitor equipment status and configure the cleaning sequence from the touchscreen interface.

Depending on the selected control package, available functions can include:

  • Cleaning interval and cycle settings
  • Rotation and cleaning status display
  • Manual and automatic operating modes
  • Alarm display
  • Interlock signals for upstream and downstream equipment
  • Electrical input configured for the installation site’s power supply

Final voltage, communication protocol and control interface must be confirmed during project engineering.

Applications in Lithium Battery Material Production

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)

Used in powder transfer, feeding and dosing lines to capture ferrous contamination introduced by upstream handling, mixing and conveying equipment.

Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) Materials

Supports contamination control in ternary cathode material production where metallic wear debris may affect downstream quality requirements.

Graphene and Conductive Powders

The rotating structure helps manage fine materials that may bridge or load static magnetic grids unevenly.

The separator can also be evaluated for other powders and granular materials after reviewing particle size, bulk density, flowability, temperature, pressure and expected ferrous contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a self-cleaning rotary grate magnetic separator work?

A self-cleaning rotary grate magnetic separator rotates its magnetic rods through the powder stream during production to reduce bridging and capture ferrous contaminants. At the preset cleaning interval, material feeding pauses briefly while the PLC starts the automatic cleaning and iron-discharge sequence. The separator then returns to its operating position and feeding resumes.

Does automatic cleaning require the powder feed to stop?

Yes. The material feed must pause briefly during the automatic cleaning cycle. The advantage is that the magnetic grate does not need to be dismantled and the rods do not need to be wiped manually. Cleaning duration should be confirmed for the selected model and process conditions.

Is the separator suitable for continuous production?

The equipment is designed to support 24-hour production schedules through programmable operating and automatic-cleaning cycles. Production includes brief feed pauses during cleaning, so it should not be described as zero-downtime operation.

Can a rotary grate magnetic separator operate under positive pressure?

The system can be configured for atmospheric, negative-pressure and slight positive-pressure conditions. Pressure rating and sealing details must be confirmed against the project specification.

What magnetic field strength is available?

The product can be configured with a surface magnetic field up to 13,000 Gs. The released specification sheet defines the measurement position, tolerance and value for each configuration.

Can it operate at 250°C?

High-temperature configurations are available for process temperatures up to 250°C when the magnetic material, seals, bearings and drive components are selected for that condition. Standard configurations may have a lower temperature limit.

How much power does the system consume?

Average operating power can remain below 0.75 kW on specified configurations. Actual consumption depends on equipment size, motor rating, cleaning frequency and auxiliary pneumatic components.

What battery materials can it process?

Typical applications include lithium iron phosphate, NMC materials, graphene and other powder or particulate feedstocks. Suitability should be evaluated using the material’s particle size, bulk density, flowability, temperature and contamination profile.

Is the design patented?

The system uses a proprietary self-cleaning structure.
