Pipe Magnetic Separator with Easy-Clean Sleeve for Slurry Iron Removal

A pipe magnetic separator is installed directly in a slurry pipeline to capture ferrous contamination from flowing material. This permanent magnetic separator is designed for slurry processing conditions where magnetic separation, corrosion resistance, and convenient cleaning need to be considered together.

The MAG SPRING® configuration shown in this video uses a pull-out easy-clean sleeve around the magnetic core. The sleeve acts as the material-contact surface, while the magnetic assembly remains enclosed inside the housing.

For routine cleaning, the top cover is opened and the sleeve assembly can be pulled out as a complete unit. This provides direct access to the magnetic collection surface and simplifies inspection and maintenance.

How Does a Pipe Magnetic Separator Work?

Slurry enters the separator housing through the connected pipeline and passes through the magnetic separation area.

Ferrous particles and other magnetic contaminants are attracted toward the magnetic surface and retained on the sleeve while the slurry continues through the flow path.

The basic separation process is:

Slurry flow → Magnetic attraction → Ferrous particle capture → Cleaner downstream material

Actual separation performance depends on factors such as:

  • magnetic field strength and measurement position
  • particle size
  • particle magnetic susceptibility
  • slurry viscosity
  • solids concentration
  • flow rate and velocity
  • separator configuration
  • installation conditions

For this reason, magnetic field strength should be considered together with the actual slurry operating conditions rather than as a standalone performance indicator.

Easy-Clean Sleeve for Slurry Magnetic Separation

The separator uses an independent easy-clean sleeve structure between the magnetic core and the processed slurry.

During operation:

  • The sleeve forms the material-contact surface.
  • The magnetic core remains protected inside the sleeve.
  • Ferrous particles are attracted and retained on the sleeve surface.
  • The sleeve can be removed for cleaning and inspection.

When cleaning is required, the operator can open the top cover and pull out the sleeve assembly as a whole.

This design provides convenient access to the magnetic collection surface without requiring the magnetic elements themselves to be individually removed.

Pull-Out Design for Cleaning and Maintenance

The easy-clean structure is designed to simplify routine maintenance.

Cleaning procedure

  1. Stop and isolate the relevant pipeline section according to the plant’s operating procedure.
  2. Make sure the equipment is depressurized and safe to open.
  3. Open the top cover.
  4. Pull out the easy-clean sleeve assembly.
  5. Remove the captured ferrous material from the sleeve surface.
  6. Inspect the sleeve, seals and coating condition.
  7. Reinstall the sleeve assembly and close the top cover.

The exact cleaning procedure should follow the installation, operating and safety requirements of the specific system.

PTFE-Coated Surfaces for Corrosive Slurry Applications

The configuration shown uses PTFE coating on the relevant inner and outer surfaces to provide a chemically resistant material-contact surface.

PTFE is commonly selected for applications where the processed medium may be chemically aggressive. However, coating selection should always be based on the actual process conditions.

Important factors include:

  • chemical composition
  • acid or alkaline concentration
  • operating temperature
  • solvent exposure
  • solids concentration
  • abrasive particle characteristics
  • cleaning method

PTFE coating should not be treated as a universal solution for every slurry.

For highly abrasive slurry, chemical resistance and wear resistance need to be evaluated separately. MAG SPRING® can review the actual slurry composition and operating conditions before confirming the material and coating configuration.

Magnetic Field Measurement With and Without the Sleeve

The easy-clean sleeve is positioned between the magnetic core and the slurry. Therefore, the magnetic field available at the material-contact surface can differ from the field measured directly on the magnetic core.

For this reason, the magnetic field can be documented in two conditions:

Measurement conditionSurface magnetic field
With easy-clean sleeve9000-10000 Gs
Without sleeve13000 Gs
Measurement positionPole
Measurement tolerance+/-500Gs

Important: The final values should be replaced with the actual measured data for the specific configuration shown.

The with-sleeve measurement is particularly useful because it represents the magnetic field at the sleeve surface under the specified measurement condition.

This provides a clearer technical reference than quoting only the bare magnetic core value.

Technical Configuration

The configuration shown in the video includes:

  • Separator type: Pipe slurry permanent magnetic separator
  • Magnetic system: Permanent magnet core
  • Cleaning system: Pull-out easy-clean sleeve
  • Sleeve: Independent removable structure
  • Surface treatment: PTFE coating
  • Application: Slurry pipeline iron removal
  • Connection: [To be confirmed]
  • Housing material: [To be confirmed]
  • Nominal size: [To be confirmed]
  • Working pressure: [To be confirmed]
  • Working temperature: [To be confirmed]
  • Surface magnetic field: [Actual value] Gs with sleeve installed

Standard dimensions, connections, pressure ratings, materials and magnetic configurations should be confirmed according to the project specification.

Applications of a Pipe Magnetic Separator

Chemical Slurry Processing

A pipe magnetic separator can be installed in chemical slurry lines where ferrous contamination may enter the process through pumps, mixers, tanks, valves, pipelines or other equipment.

The separator configuration should be selected according to the chemical composition, temperature, viscosity and solids content of the slurry.

Battery Material Slurry

For battery material processing, magnetic separation can be used as part of contamination-control procedures in slurry preparation and related material handling stages.

For cathode, anode or precursor-related applications, separator selection should consider the material formulation, particle characteristics, viscosity, flow rate and required contamination-control level.

Pigments, Inks and Coatings

Magnetic separation can help capture ferrous particles in pigment dispersions, inks and coating materials where unwanted metallic contamination may affect downstream processing or finished-material quality.

Resins, Emulsions and Adhesives

For resins, emulsions, adhesives and other liquid formulations, the separator configuration should be matched to viscosity, temperature, chemical compatibility and flow conditions.

Other Slurry Processing Applications

The same basic separation principle can be considered for other process slurries where ferrous contamination needs to be controlled.

Application suitability should be confirmed according to the actual material and operating conditions.

How to Select a Pipe Magnetic Separator for Slurry

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pipe magnetic separator?

A pipe magnetic separator is a permanent magnetic separation unit installed in a pipeline to capture ferrous contamination from flowing liquid or slurry. The MAG SPRING® configuration shown here uses an easy-clean sleeve around the magnetic core.

What is an easy-clean sleeve?

An easy-clean sleeve is a removable component positioned around the magnetic core. During operation, ferrous particles are collected on the sleeve surface. The sleeve can then be pulled out as an assembly for cleaning and inspection.

Why use a sleeve around the magnetic core?

The sleeve provides a defined material-contact surface between the processed slurry and the magnetic core. It also allows captured material to be removed from the separator during cleaning without directly handling the magnetic core.

Why measure the magnetic field with the sleeve installed?

The sleeve creates a physical distance between the magnetic core and the material-contact surface. Therefore, the magnetic field measured at the sleeve surface can differ from the field measured directly on the magnetic core.

For application evaluation, the with-sleeve measurement is a more relevant reference for the operating configuration.

Is PTFE suitable for all slurry applications?

No. PTFE can provide useful chemical resistance, but coating selection depends on the actual slurry composition, temperature, concentration, cleaning chemicals and abrasive characteristics.

The material and coating should therefore be confirmed against the specific process conditions.

How is the easy-clean sleeve removed?

After the relevant pipeline section has been safely isolated and depressurized, the top cover can be opened and the sleeve assembly pulled out according to the equipment operating procedure.

What magnetic field strength is available?

The available magnetic field depends on the magnet grade, magnetic circuit, sleeve configuration and measurement position.

For this reason, the actual specification should state the measured value, measurement position and whether the sleeve is installed.

What information is required for separator selection?

The main information includes slurry composition, solids content, particle size, viscosity, flow rate, temperature, pressure, pipeline size, connection standard and required contamination-control conditions.
